Calderwood's foul shots lift UCSC

OAKLAND - Senior center Melanie Calderwood swished two free throws with 10 seconds remaining as the UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team knocked off the hosts of the Mills College Tournament, 55-53 on Saturday. Calderwood, who finished with 10 points, was attempting a game-winning field goal when she was fouled. Shana Margolis, a junior forward, had most of her team-high 20 points from offensive rebounds, according to UCSC Coach Lisa Cech. Margolis added 12 rebounds as the Banana Slugs finished the season with an 8 11 record. Mills dropped to 10 10.
UCSC freshman guard Libby Smith tied the game at 51-51 when she stole the ball, made a layup and connected on a free throw with 1 min. left. Smith finished with 10 points.
