Box Score Thousand Oaks, Calif. --- Despite great shooting, the UCSC men's basketball team could not slow down Cal Lutheran in a 73-64 loss.
The Slugs were 16-of-28 from the floor in the first 20 minutes, but the Kingsmen built a lead to as much as 13 points on equally strong shooting going 16-of-30 from the floor including 6-of-11 from behind the arch.
Freshman center Will Crain finished with 14 points, senior Jared Ponce finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Slugs, and sophomore Sam Gabbard added 11 points including a 3-pointer to end the first half after Crain hit a layup and Adam Marlow stole the inbound pass cutting the lead to 34-39.
UCSC (1-7) could not keep the momentum from that final sequence rolling into the start of the second half as they managed only 4 points in the first 5 minutes. The Slugs kept within reach after freshman Ben Dorfman's three-ball with 3:00 remaining cut the Cal Lutheran (4-1) lead to 3 points. But that was as close as the Slugs would get.
Four Kingsmen finished in double-figures scoring, including Adrian Francis who finished with a game-high 24. Connor McGuire added a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
UCSC has a break before heading back out on the road for a game against George Fox in Newberg, Ore. at 4:00 p.m. PST.
