Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Senior guard Jared Ponce scored 14 points, but the Slugs dropped a 50-58 decision to Cal Tech, Saturday.
UCSC (1-6) shot only 32.8% from the field, but held the lead for much of the game with strong defense and great ball security.
Sophomore Adam Marlow totaled 11 points and 6 rebounds. Fellow sophomore Sam Gabbard pitched in with 7 points and 5 rebounds.
After a slow start to the game by both teams, UCSC went on an 18-5 run capped by a J. Ponce 3-pointer to give the Slugs their largest lead of the game halfway through the first half. Capitalizing on 10 1st half turnovers and holding Lawrence Lee to 2 for 10 shooting, the Slugs led at the half 31-25.
In the second half, the Beavers went on an 11-0 run of their own to take the lead 39-37. Marlow answered with a 3-pointer and layup but Cal Tech stormed back stretching the lead to 51-46 with 2:13 remaining.
Cal Tech made their free throws down the stretch to end any chances for the Slugs.
Cal Tech (2-4) shot 89 percent from the line. Ricky Galliani had 15 points and 8 rebounds while Lawrence Lee added a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds). Off the bench David Kawashima scored 10 points to go along with his 7 rebounds and 4 steals.
UCSC road trip continues as they head across town to Thousand Oaks, Calif. To face Cal Lutheran. The Slugs and Kingsmen will square off at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.
