Lady Slugs Beat by Pomona-Pitzer in Regionals

CLAREMONT, CA – In the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, Pomona-Pitzer eased its way to a 5-0 first round win over U.C. Santa Cruz on May 9 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Santa Cruz's season comes to a close with a 5-17 record while Pomona-Pitzer improved to 16-7 and will face La Verne in the second round at 10 a.m. PST on Saturday, May 10.
Samantha Chao and Lea Lynn Yen got the first point of the match for Pomona-Pitzer in No. 1 doubles, winning 8-4 over Santa Cruz's Alexandra Scotten and Mary Collins. In No. 3 doubles, Pomona-Pitzer earned its largest margin of victory, 8-2, over Monika Prokes and Kassondra Heacock.
In singles, Pomona-Pitzer won two points quickly to earn the victory and advance to the second round. Maddie Gordon earned a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles. Samantha Chao then took the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-0 for the fifth and deciding point of the match.
