Box Score FOREST GROVE, OR -- UC Santa Cruz finished their weekend trip to Oregon Sunday as they took on Pacific University in Forest Grove. The Slugs would ride a strong first half performance for a 54-47 win over the Boxers.
Both teams were coming off wins in their last game. UC Santa Cruz won 73-52 over Willamette University in Salem on Saturday and Pacific won 88-50 over California Institute of Technology on Saturday in Forest Grove.
Just like Saturday's contest against Willamette, the game started on a back and forth pace. Pacific would gain their largest lead of the game, at one, at 7-6 with 17:24 left on a Sarah Curl three pointer. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good on their next trip down the floor as Leah Parrish made a layup to give them an 8-7 lead with 17:09 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain a double digit lead with ten minutes left, at 21-11, after two Parrish free throws. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the game, at seventeen, on two occasions, the second coming with 5:57 left in the half to make the score 30-13 on a Sarah Mackey jumper. The Boxers would trim in the Banana Slugs' lead before the half but the Banana Slugs would lead 32-20 at the halftime intermission.
The Boxers would trim into the Banana Slugs lead cutting the lead to single digits, at 32-24 on a Curl jumper with 16:27 left. The Boxers would come as close as four, at 38-34, on a Curl three pointer with 7:49 left. The Slugs would hold the Boxers off and would expand their lead to double digits, at 46-35, with 4:06 left on a Sarah FitzGerald three pointer. The Boxers outscored the Banana Slugs through the remainder of the contest 12-8, but the Banana Slugs closed their Oregon trip with their victory 54-47.
Geena Giovannetti and Mackey both had twelve points for the Banana Slugs. Curl had a game high sixteen points for the Boxers. Leah Parrish had eight points for the Banana Slugs in the win. Olivia Cook had a double double for the Boxers with ten points and ten rebounds.
The Banana Slugs shot 35.7% (20-56) from the field, 19% (4-21) from the three point line and was 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line. The Boxers shot 30% (18-60) from the field, 38.5% (5-13) from the three point line and 75% (6-8) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced fourteen Boxers turnovers scoring twelve points off the turnovers while the Boxers' defense forced thirteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring fifteen points off the turnovers. Pacific outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 37-36 and the Banana Slugs had six more points in the paint (8-2) than did the Boxers.
The Slugs will play their next game on Friday against Pomona-Pitzer. The game will be a part of the CMS Thanksgiving Tournament. Tipoff is set for 3 pm.
