Slugs Fall to San Jose State

SAN JOSE, CA -- On a very windy day, UC Santa Cruz Women's tennis fell to Division I San Jose State 7-0. Despite the loss, the slugs compete hard and fought till the end. San Jose State took two out of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 3, Truong and Emily defeated the Santa Cruz pair of sophomores Rachel Shinto and Angela Humphrey 8-2. Next off the court was senior Taylor Mannix and sophomore Ariana Mokhtari who fell to Leon-Chao and Florea 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, the Santa Cruz team of sophomore Laura Wade and freshman Alex Scotten went down 4-1 before fighting back and taking the match 8-6 against Guzman and Marshall for UCSC's only win on the day.
In singles, the slugs competed hard and fell in some close matches. At No. 4, Wade split sets and lost a close 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 match to Florea. Freshman Sarah Courtland played a tough match and fell just short at No. 6 to Prescott 5-7, 6-7(5). At No. 3 singles, Scotten battled hard to the end but lost a close three set match to Marshall, 6-4, 2-6, 5-7. Up next for the Slugs is the first Division III match of the season, where they face regional rival University of Redlands on Saturday, February 12 at 2pm at UC Santa Cruz.
