The UCSC Women's Basketball team opened their season 1-1 this past weekend at the David Wells Classic host by Claremont Mudd-Scripps.
In their opener, the team defeated Ponoma Pitzer, 70-64. UCSC overcame a 34-point effort by the Sagehens' Tamara Kislak to open their season at 1-0. Junior Guard Rachel Baudler lead the team with 18 points, shooting 4 of 7 from downtown. Junior Forward Shannamar Dewey had 12 points and 6 rebounds.
In Game 2, UCSC narrowly came up short against host Claremont Mudd-Scripps, losing 61-66. Baudler once again came up strong, leading UCSC with 15 points and five rebounds, but Claremont had 15 steals and shot better than the Banana Slugs at the free throw line to drop UCSC to 1-1.
This is a critical year for the team, coming off arguably their best season in 2001-2002. Though they finished at 8-17 overall, the team qualified for the NAIA Cal Pac Conference playoffs with a conference record of 7-6 in only their first year competing in the conference.
The team's next game will be this Saturday at home against Holy Names College, their first Cal Pac Conference opponent of the season. Game time is at 7:30 PM.
