UCs Happy Ending "It was nice to end up with a win," UCSC women's basketball coach Shevy Schindler said after seeing his Sea Lions coast to a 53-41 victory over College of Notre Dame in the Sea Lions' final game' of the season. Schindler pointed to his squad's handling of the Notre Dame defensive pressure as the key to the victory.
"In the last eight minutes, we were ahead by anywhere from nine to 14 points," Schindler said. "Notre Dame put a lot of pressure on us in those last eight minutes. We remained calm and cool, though. We had pretty good control."
The Sea Lions were led by Jeanne Collopy, who poured in 19 points. Claire Dean added 15 points to the Sea Lion cause while Bobbie Shacklett added nine. "Jeanne shot the eyes out of the basket in the first half," Schindler said. "She finished the first half with 15 points. But then they doubled up on her a lot in the second half But Claire had 13 of her points in the second half."
Schindler was happy with the free-throw shooting of his squad. The Sea Lions were 17-of-24 from the charity stripe for 75 per cent. Schindler said that Notre Dame intentionally fouled the Sea Lion players often in the last eight minutes, in an attempt to catch up. "Everyone played well," Schindler said. "It's too bad it's our last game. We were just starting to play well together."
