UCSC women fall to ND

SANTA CRUZ - Ten minutes into the game, UCSC's women's basketball team found itself on the short end of a 20-3 score. Things got better by the end of the game, but not enough as College of Notre Dame prevailed 63-54 in a Redwood Conference game Friday. "We started out cold and they got hot very fast," UCSC Coach Shevy Schindler said. "That (Mar) Stevens is an excellent shooter."

Stevens scored a game-high 28 points for Notre Dame, 10 of which came in the first eight minutes to help ND take command of the game right from the start. UCSC cut its 17-point deficit to 11 (32-21) by half time, and continued to stay close to Notre Dame in the second half but could get no closer than the final margin of nine points. Jeannie Collopy paced UCSC with 15 points. She was the only UCSC player who scored in double figures.
