UCSC Has Lead, Until End

Santa Cruz Sentinel-Jan. 13, 1982
REDWOOD CITY - The UCSC women's basketball team found itself in an unusual position Tuesday night leading by nine points midway through the second half. But, the Sea Lions simply ran out of gas as Notre Dame-Belmont outscored UCSC, 20-6, down the stretch to come away with a 42-37 victory. "I guess our layoff really hurt us," said UCSC Coach Shevy Schindler, whose team returned to competition for the first time since Dec. 12. "It was that inactivity that did us in. We felt pretty good that we were able to just run up and down the court."
Playing a tight man-to-man defense, UCSC was able to take a 31-22 advantage midway through the second half, but Notre Dame's Pat Callagy and Debbie Imsand then went to work. "They turned red-hot there," Schindler said of the pair, who combined for 34 points in the game.
"We still feel pretty good about it," he added. "At least we didn't get bombed out of there "
The Sea Lions slip to 1-7 on the season overall.
