The UCSC Sea Lions men's basketball team reached an important milestone when it split a pair of games this weekend. UCSC defeated San Jose Bible College on the road Friday. 88-43, but then followed that with a heartbreaking 72-66 loss at home to the Naval Postgraduate School.
Those two games left the Sea Lions at 4-14 overall but that fourth victory equaled UCSC's win total of last year when the team went 4-22 The Sea Lions have seven games left with which to improve on that mark.
"We're getting closer to winning the close ones," said second-year Sea Lion Coach Joe Richardson, whose team failed to do that Saturday against the Naval Postgraduate School after taking the lead by two points with two minutes to go. The Sea Lions however missed the front ends of five one-and-one free throw opportunities down the stretch and let the victory slip away.
"That was the fourth good game we've played in a row," Richardson said. "We had a real good opportunity to win, but our inability to hit the free throws did us in." UCSC hit 8 of-18 from the free throw line in the game compared to 18-of-20 for Navy.
On Friday UCSC found itself in an unusual position dominating an opponent. The Sea Lions powered their way to a 52-18 lead by the half before finally tapering off.
"It was nice to win, dominating or not," Richardson said "Everybody got to play. The kids enjoyed winning it."
David Moss led UCSC both nights offensively with 22 points Saturday and 27 on Friday to boost his average as the Sea Lions' leading scorer. Teammate Mike Weaver scored 21 and 13 respectively "Those two have been carrying the load all year," Richardson said, "but now everybody else is starting to get into it. We've made a lot of progress.
