On Thursday, May 26, UC Santa Cruz welcomes two distinguished NASA astronauts to share highlights from their history-making 168-day mission aboard the International Space Station. NASA Astronauts Michael Hopkins and Victor Glover flew to space on a brand new spacecraft bound for the International Space Station, as Commander and Pilot of Crew-1, respectively. The pair launched with their crewmates on November 15, 2020 on the SpaceX Dragon, which was the first operational crewed flight of the newly certified spacecraft. Crew-1 was comprised of Hopkins, Glover and two mission specialists, who spent nearly six months living and working in space aboard the orbiting laboratory as part of Expedition 64. SpaceX Crew-1 returned to Earth on May 2, 2021, executing the first nighttime splashdown for NASA astronauts since Apollo 8 in 1968. Their 168-day mission set the record for the longest space flight for a vehicle with U.S. crew.
Hopkins and Glover are both visiting the campus May 26-27. Both astronauts are former student-athletes themselves, having both played football. There is an opportunity for the local community and our entire student body to attend a talk led by them Thursday May 26th, from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the Stevenson Event Center. This talk will include a presentation about their experiences in space and a Q&A using pre-submitted audience questions from the registration page.
Questions related to the event and attending at Stevenson Event Center can be submitted here.
