Four Slugs Land Spots on C2C Athlete of the Week List

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – On Monday afternoon, the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference announced the weekly Athlete of the Week honorees and UC Santa Cruz earned a clean sweep in both women's volleyball and cross country, picking up all four honors that were up for grabs. Among this week's honorees were Maddie Marshall and Shiraz Benyoucef from women's volleyball along with Elena Stanciu and Andrew Mysliwiec from women's and men's cross country.

Maddie Marshall had one of the best weekends in the country, leading the attack with 47 kills in an undefeated weekend as UCSC earned two four set victories and two five set victories which included a win over No. 25 CMS. Marshall had double digit kills in all four of her matches, averaged 2.76 kills per set, and ended the weekend with a .367 hitting percentage. Marshall also had 10 total blocks on the weekend, including six block assists and one solo against Redlands. Marshall was also named the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational Most Valuable Player for her efforts as the Banana Slugs went a perfect 4-0 at the tournament to go along with a fifth win earlier in the week against Occidental.

Shiraz Benyoucef anchored the Banana Slugs all week in that 5-0 stretch in Southern California, including a five set thriller over No. 25 CMS. Benyoucef picked up 109 digs, good for a 4.95 digs per set average and recorded 13 service aces. Benyoucef also dished out 19 assists on the week and was nearly flawless once again on service receptions with 92 total with just five errors.

Elena Stanciu turned heads at the UC Riverside Invitational over the weekend as she crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 20:25.3, finishing in third overall and second among collegiate competitors. Stanciu was also the first NCAA Division III competitor to cross the line, making headlines in her season debut. Stanciu's time is the fastest time in program history and stands as one of the top times in all of NCAA Division III. Notably, Stanciu defeated all runners from interregional foes Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer and stood right at the top in one of California's premier cross country races that features exceptional talent from Division I, II, and III programs.

Andrew Mysliwiec led the way for UCSC at UC Riverside, earning the team's lone top 100 finish at 76th place overall with a time of 24:54. Mysliwiec becomes just the fifth underclassmen to break the 25 minute barrier in UC Santa Cruz history.
