SANTA CRUZ, Ca. - Earlier this week, the UC Santa Cruz Athletic and Recreation Department broke ground on the East Tennis Courts. In their history, the East Tennis Courts have historically played host to the highest level of competition in all of NCAA Division III tennis with the Banana Slugs forging their seven NCAA Division III Men's Tennis National Championships on these courts and over 180 All-Americans between both men's and women's tennis. The project will bring tennis back to the East side of campus with a full six court renovation.Â
The renovation will restore our ability to host practices, competitions, camps, intramural, and club activities for years to come. This project honors our history while positioning us for continued growth. This also reflects our commitment to creating spaces that support health, connection, and community. This is just a small step forward as we continue to advance our campus and make this a space people can call home.
"This project represents a huge milestone for our department and campus and has brought about an electric energy and excitement for the near future! Restoring these courts will aid in our tireless efforts to bring our facilities here at UC Santa Cruz to best in class standards, and will enable us to resume hosting national championship caliber Mens and Women's tennis programs. Beyond the varsity scope, these courts being back online offers much needed additional spaces for students, faculty, and staff to recreate on our campus. Extending beyond our own campus, we're excited to be able to continue being community partners to the greater Santa Cruz area, and look forward to hosting camps, clinics, and events for years to come." - Director of Athletics and Recreation, Chris Spells
