DUBUQUE, Ia. – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team fell to the No. 25 Loras College Duhawks 1-0 Midwest match up on Thursday evening. The Banana Slugs and Duhawks fought through a nearly full contest with scoreless action before Loras found the back of the net in the 88th minute. The Duhawks featured a heavy attack, recording 25 shots to the Banana Slugs six shots, putting 12 on frame with
Ainsley Gove making 11 saves on the day. Camille Aneet and
Sydney Boyd did the bulk of the offensive work with the duo both recording two shots while Boyd putting two on frame. Unfortunately, the late goal from the Duhawks stood as the game winner as UCSC fell 1-0, dropping to 2-4-1 on the year.
How It Happened
The Duhawks controlled pace of play early in the contest as they took four shots in the opening five minutes of play, hitting the crossbar just 41 seconds in before one shot was blocked while another was saved by
Ainsley Gove. Loras outshot UC Santa Cruz 10-4 in the first half overall with Gove recording three saves while the Loras keeper was challenged with one shot on goal.
After a scoreless first half, the Duhawks ramped up the intensity, recording 15 shots to the Banana Slugs two. Gove recorded eight saves in the half and nearly had a clean shot across a full 90 but after a congested play in the box, the Duhawks managed to squeeze one past the backline and into the goal in the 88th to score the game winner, defeating UC Santa Cruz 1-0 on Thursday evening.
