PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team snapped their three game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers on Saturday night. The Banana Slugs played well for a full 90 minutes, holding most of the possession while outshooting the Pioneers 13-9 on the day with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Banana Slugs game winner came in the 28th minute as
Madeline Puente put one in the back of the net to kept UCSC on the board. UC Santa Cruz is now 3-4-1 on the year and will travel to Chapman University on Oct. 4 at 11:00 a.m. for their next contest.
How It Happened
The Banana Slugs created numerous dangerous chances in the opening 7:12 of action as
Sydney Boyd put two shots on frame to test the Pioneers early before
Camille Anneet forced the keeper in the 8th minute, but all three attempts were saved, keeping the game scoreless early.
The Pioneers countered earning three corners in the span of just under a minute while firing off four separate shots but
Ainsley Gove made two saves while the back line blocked one shot to keep things knotted at 0-0.
UC Santa Cruz finally broke the tie in the 28th minute as
Madeline Puente scored her first goal of her career to put the Banana Slugs on top 1-0. The Pioneers took one more shot but missed high as UCSC took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Banana Slugs controlled the action in the second half, taking another eight shots in the final 45 minutes with their most dangerous attempt coming from Susanaitzel Jaurez-Mancera who rung one off the crossbar in the 81st minute. The Pioneers couldn't find an answer in the second half as UC Santa Cruz coasted to the 1-0 victory.
