SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 1-0 match to the University of Chicago Maroons on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons scored in the 17th minute and held off the Banana Slugs for the remainder of the contest despite heavy pressure in the final moments of action. UC Santa Cruz is now 0-1-1 on the season and will be on the road for their next matches on Sept. 5 and Sept. 7 against Pacific (Or.) and Lewis and Clark.
How It Happened
The Banana Slugs were knocking on the door right after the opening whistle with
Tiana Stouch sending two shots on goal just over a minute into the game with
Tatiana Fernandez putting another shot on frame just over a minute later. The Maroons quickly countered, forcing
Ainsley Gove to make a save in the fourth minute before finding the back of the net in the 17th minute with a header to the left post after a hard cross across the box.
The two teams played hard despite the heat on the sunny day in Santa Cruz, but the Maroons were able to keep UCSC off the board for a full 90 minutes to earn the 1-0 win. UC Santa Cruz managed to pressure the University of Chicago for the final 10 minutes with
Cassidy Segrell putting a shot on goal in the 85th minute but the Maroons were there to make the save and keep UCSC at bay.
