HAVERFORD, Pa. - The UC Santa Cruz women's volleyball team came to Pennsylvania ready to play, winning their match against the Haverford College Black Squirrels 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-19). Standouts from the game include Ashley Magley with 11 kills, Anna Hospodar with 15 digs, and Kate Lau with 14 digs.
How It Happened
The Slugs started off strong, scoring the first three points of set one. UC Santa Cruz held the lead, with Haverford coming close at 6-5. However, strong serves from Abigail Lee and blocks from Drew Bryant and Olly Gordon widened the gap to 10-5. After a time-out by Haverford, the Black Squires came back and managed to score two points for a 10-7 score before the Slugs fought back, continually taking the lead with points here and there from Haverford. While at 20-16, the Black Squires managed to snag three; however, the Banana Slugs were not going to be stopped, and despite Haverford putting up five more points, the Slugs secured the first set win with a kill from Olly Gordon for a 25-22 finish.
Set two started neck and neck for the Black Squirrels and the Slugs, trading points back and forth, tying the game up at 2-2, 5-5, and 7-7. The one-point difference between the two teams wasn't broken until Kate Lau scored a kill for the Slugs, making the score 11-9. Using this momentum, Kelly Ann Greene and Ashley Magley landed a strong block, which Magley followed up with a kill, staying in the lead and scoring 14-9. UC Santa Cruz was on a roll, and while the Black Squirrels managed to score four more points, they proved no match for the Slugs, who finished the set 25-14.
UC Santa Cruz put up the first three points of set three, with a block from Kate Lau and Olly Gordon, followed by an ace and a kill from the two, respectively. With aces and kills from players across the board, the Slugs did not let up, creating a ten-point lead of 12-2. The Black Squirrels slowed down the Slug's rampage, chipping away at the Slugs lead, bringing the game to 19-8. Not to be finished off yet, Haverford fought hard, scoring six consecutive points before a service error stopped the streak at 20-14. Taking this side out, the teams traded a few points before the Banana Slugs wrapped up the game 25-19 for a three-set sweep.
