Box Score SAN RAFAEL-- UC Santa Cruz, the 36th-ranked team in Division III, battled hard in a 5-2 dual loss to Division II Dominican on Sunday afternoon.
Playing under Division II rules, the Penguins managed the first point after taking two of the three doubles matches. Senior
Tanner Rowland had her first doubles match of the spring, teaming with
Meghana Damojipurapu at No. 2. The Banana Slugs staved off the sweep when the duo of first-years
Chloe Wu and
Sweden Van Houten won 7-6 at No. 3. It was the pair's second consecutive dual win.
The Banana Slugs tied the match with the first win of the singles, courtesy of
Natalie Sprenger defeating the Penguins' Carolina Guerrero 6-3, 6-0. It was the second year in a row that Sprenger beat Guerrero in a dual.
The hosts however didn't drop a set in taking the next three matches to earn the dual. UC Santa Cruz got another point when Van Houten won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.Â
UC Santa Cruz returns to action Monday afternoon when they take on Colorado College at the La Madrona Athletic Club in Scotts Valley.
