ST. LOUIS, Mo. – UC Santa Cruz men's basketball challenged No. 2 Washington University (St. Louis) on Saturday but ultimately fell 91-72 after a strong first half kept the game competitive. The Banana Slugs showcased grit and resilience on the road, leading at halftime before WashU pulled away late in the second half.
How It Happened
UCSC came out firing, trading baskets with the Bears in a tightly contested first half that saw 13 ties and nine lead changes. The Banana Slugs shot an impressive 53% from the field and knocked down six three-pointers to take a 41-39 lead into halftime.
Ryan Wilson and
Zino Okah sparked the offense, while the Slugs' defense forced several key misses to keep the Bears within reach.
In the second half, UCSC fought to maintain their momentum but struggled to convert on key possessions. WashU took advantage of late turnovers and second-chance opportunities to build their lead, but the Banana Slugs remained aggressive, battling on the boards and scoring in transition.
Ryan Wilson led UCSC with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, adding four assists and three rebounds.
Zino Okah contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals, while Joe Espy added 13 points and three rebounds.
Andrew Ferrara-Jones and
Caden Breznikar chipped in on both ends, combining for 12 points and six rebounds.
As a team, the Banana Slugs shot 43.8% from the field and hit nine three-pointers while holding their own on the glass with 25 rebounds. UCSC's depth was on display as eight players scored in the effort, showing their ability to compete against one of the top teams in the country.
The Banana Slugs will look to bounce back in their next game on Sunday, December 15th against Caltech in Pasadena.
