Celine Castaneda set a school record en route to a career-high 16 points. Despite this accomplishment, UC Santa Cruz couldn't overcome Pomona-Pitzer's free throw shooting in a 68-57 loss Saturday at the West Field House.
The Sagehens had a 31-23 lead at halftime, and pushed the lead to 47-29 seven minutes into the third.
Jenna Gorton's last-minute layup and
Alyssa Jackson's three pointer with a second left got UC Santa Cruz to within 47-38 entering the last quarter. In the last quarter, the Sagehens made timely shots and free-throws to answer everything UC Santa Cruz did on offense to finish out the game. Jadyn Lee led the Sagehens with 30 points, including 12-12 on the free throw line. Overall, Pomona-Pitzer made all 23 of their attempts from the line.
Castaneda was a perfect 8-8 on field goals in the contest. It was the first "perfect game" by a Banana Slug in 11 years and Castaneda became the first player in program history to make eight baskets in a game without a miss. Jackson had 14 points and four assists, while Gorton scored 10 points along with three blocks.
UC Santa Cruz (5-10) have eleven days off before their next contest January 17
th at Menlo.
