The UC Santa Cruz women's golf team looks to reload in 2023-24 and continue their pursuit as a national contender.
Â
Last year, the team was American Southwest Conference (ASC) runner-up and finished ranked nationally by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for the second straight year. Three experienced student-athletes will lead the team into the new season as they look to continue their recent run of success.
Â
Senior Alyssa Yee has been a huge part of the Banana Slugs' success at Conference, including being the one of the first Banana Slugs to make the ASC All-Tournament team two years ago.
Fellow senior, Mikaela Paracuelles, was ASC All-Conference and All-Tournament last year and is a three-time WGCA Scholar All-American. Junior Tani Ng finished 13th at the Conference Championship and looks to continue improving her form going into the new season.
Â
"Returners Alyssa, Mikaela, and Tani are great mentors and contributors to the golf program as well as other organizations on campus," said head coach Paulette Pera. "All three of the veterans are playing really well right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Alyssa puts up a win for UCSC in her senior year. She's always been a good ball striker, but this year she has really brought it up a notch."
Â
Three new student-athletes join the team for 2023-24. Junior Isabella Esquivel played four years at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento and reached the CIF Section Championship each of those four years. First years Jiya Dayal (Simi Valley, CA) and Elena McGrew (Scotts Valley, CA) bring their academic and athletic prowess from their prep careers to the team.
Â
"We are really excited to have new players on our team and they fit right in," said Yee. "We have high hopes for our first two tournaments the next few weeks and can't wait to have fun with my team."
Â
The schedule opens today, September 11th when the Banana Slugs face several Division III powers at the California Intercollegiate in Ventura. The team stays on the road and will see conference competition right away the following weekend at the ASC Preview at the Oak Wing Golf Course in Alexandria, Louisiana.
