UC Santa Cruz men's soccer got first half goals from
Caleb Lee and
Torin Volkamer in a 2-1 win over Whitworth University on Sunday.
The Banana Slugs even their record at 2-2 for the year after their second win of the weekend.
Lee had a one-touch finish in the 26
th minute from
Luca Bravo. It was Lee's first goal of the year.
"Once I saw Luca drive down the line with the ball, I knew I had to work to get in the box," Lee said. "As soon as he looked up and we made eye contact, he sent it in perfectly to tap in. It was a really great build-up from the back. Our team really deserved it and it was really exciting for me and the whole team."
Â
Volkamer doubled the Banana Slugs' advantage seven minutes later after
Owen Deming stole the ball and sent in a cross that Volkamer half-volleyed for his second goal of the year.
Â
Whitworth brought more pressure in the second half and was able to pull one back after a penalty for a handball in the box. The Banana Slugs however held on for the win, holding the Pirates to just two shots in the last 20 minutes. Overall the Banana Slugs had a 20-8 shot advantage.
"Today was a grind, especially the second half," said Lee. "Huge group effort. Big shout out for our defense: they hung really strong and put in a huge shift. To get our record back at .500 going into games with two D2 schools is a great feeling for us."
The Banana Slugs next take on Academy of Art Friday afternoon in San Francisco.
