CLAREMONT (9-1) – UC Santa Cruz's women's soccer team opened their 2023 campaign as they visited Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens scored a goal late in the first half to defeat the Banana Slugs 1-0.
In the first half, Banana Slugs' best chance to score came with 8:06 left but
Tatiana Fernandez's shot was saved. Kelsey Shintaku would score to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. with 1:04 left in the half.
In the second half with 3:04 left,
Eissa Quinones would take the final shot of the match for the Banana Slugs but her shot went just wide.
Fernandez had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs. Pomona-Pitzer outshot  UC Santa Cruz 17-4 and the Sagehens had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Amelia Brown recorded seven saves of her career-high eight saves for the Banana Slugs in the second half. UC Santa Cruz will wrap up their trip to Southern California as they cross Sixth Street to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 11 am.
