CLAREMONT--
Susanaitzel Juarez-Mancera got her first career goal and
Sydney Boyd had a brace as UC Santa Cruz defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-1 on Sunday.
The Banana Slugs improve to 1-1 on the season. It was their first win over the Athenas, in their last six games, dating back to 2014.
It took less than a minute for the Banana Slugs to get on the board when Juarez-Mancera sent back a goalie punchout on the first shot of the game. UC Santa Cruz almost made another goal less than two minutes later when
Camille Anneet's shot was pushed out for a corner. The Banana Slug barrage paid off in the sixth minute when Boyd scored her first goal of the season after getting on the end of a pass from
Amanda Scott.
The Banana Slugs had another chance after three straight corners in the 24th minute that ended when Juarez-Mancera sent her header over the bar.
The 2-0 lead stayed until 12:30 into the second half when the hosts were able to pull one back. The Banana Slug defense then settled in and held off several CMS attempts at goal. The best chance came in the 72nd minute but
Angela Bradbury cleared the ball off the line. The game was finished off by Boyd in the 82nd minute when she got a half volley outside the box that banged off the cross bar and in.
UC Santa Cruz had an 18-13 shot advantage over the Athenas.
The Banana Slugs will next travel to Washington for a three-game trip, beginning at Whitman on Saturday at 10:00 am.
