CLAREMONT-- No. 39 UC Santa Cruz opened their weekend trip with a 7-2 loss to No. 18 Mary Washington in a dual match played at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Banana Slugs took a point in the last doubles match, when No. 1 pair of
Andrew Tjoa and
Lucas Chen outlasted the UMW duo 8-7 with a tiebreaker. The Eagles however took the dual with wins in the first three singles. Tjoa got the Banana Slugs a point in the next-to-last match to finish with a straight-set win at No. 5.
The Banana Slugs (2-5) play again Sunday morning at CMS when they face another Virginia team in 37th-ranked Christopher Newport.
