Women's basketball closes regular season with close loss at Dominican

SAN RAFAEL- UC Santa Cruz Women's Basketball played Division II Dominican University and unfortunately were defeated in their last game of the regular season 74-69.
 
The Banana Slugs started the game with eagerness and power, with Kaylee Murphy putting the first points to the board making the game 2-0 (9:13). The Banana Slugs kept the intensity the whole first quarter taking the lead of 19-16 after one quarter. The second quarter was played at a faster pace and like a fight, with Dominican having six steals. Dominican was able to come back from the second quarter and end the half in the lead at 41-36.
 
The third quarter started with the Banana Slugs fighting to win back the lead. Great teamwork was made with Tess Oakley-Stilson getting a defensive rebound,  and passing it to Murphy for Ashley Kowack to make a flawless layup making the score 48-40 (6:52 left). In the last 23 seconds of the quarter, Murphy made a beautiful steal into a layup, leaving the Banana Slugs only 4 points behind 56-52. Fourth quarter was very aggressive with many fouls called. The game ended with Dominican securing their lead and the score being 74-69.
 
The game ended with an overall 18 points and 10 rebounds made by Murphy. Contributing 16 points each were Amanda Inserra and Kowack. Oakley-Stilson had the most rebounds of the game with 12, helping the Banana Slugs earn a 45-29 rebounds advantage. Altogether, the seniors ended their season contributing greatly to the scoreboard and the team.
 
This will conclude the 2022-2023 regular season for Women's Basketball, who are 17-5 and had an outstanding season with career records and beautiful plays. They will begin the C2C tournament at Fredericksburg, Virginia starting February 23rd.
