Varade puts UC Santa Cruz over top against Menlo

Sophomore wins final match to close dual

Varade returns a serve in his win Sunday
UC Santa Cruz opened their Spring season with an entertaining 5-4 home win over Menlo College on Sunday afternoon.
The Banana Slugs opened with a 3-0 sweep in doubles, topped with Andrew Tjoa and Lucas Chen winning 8-7 at No. 1.
However, Menlo's seasoned International student-athletes captured the first two singles matches. Sam Hall won at No. 3 singles in a tie-breaker to make it 4-2. However, the Oaks took the next two singles matches to tie the overall dual at 4-4.

The dual match came down to Praneet Varade at No. 6 singles, but he defeated the Oaks' Erkin Tootoonchi 6-2, 6-0 to give UC Santa Cruz the win.
The Banana Slugs take a three-match roadtrip next weekend, beginning Friday the 17th at 16th-ranked Caltech.
