Murphy hits 1,000 boards as UC Santa Cruz ease past Pacific Union

Banana Slugs never threatened in 81-26 home win

Kaylee Murphy was one of five Banana Slugs in double figures and hit an amazing personal milestone on Thursday as UC Santa Cruz overwhelmed short-handed Pacific Union 81-26 at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
UC Santa Cruz (14-4) won their fourth-straight game.
Murphy finished with a team-high tying nine rebounds and became the first Banana Slug ever to reach 1,000 in her career.
"I kind of knew because my sister Trista keeps track of the stats; she's really big on that," Murphy said after. "Coming into tonight I didn't know how many I had to get, and I liked that because I didn't have to think about it."
Murphy reached the milestone at the 9:13 mark of the second quarter with UC Santa Cruz already up 22-4 after they opened the game on a 20-0 run. The lead was 40-11 at the half after Pacific Union was held to just three made shots and four free-throws. The game finished with the Pioneers shooting just 9-42 (21.4%) from the field while the Banana Slugs were 32-79 overall (40.5%). UC Santa Cruz also had 16 steals and forced the Pioneers into 29 turnovers.
Ashley Kowack led the Banana Slugs with 14 points, along with nine rebounds and team-highs of four assists, four steals and two blocks. Murphy scored 13, Aubrey Wagner had 11, Ariel Anderson had a career-high 11 points off the bench and Amanda Inserra had 10.
Cameron Genteroy had eight points to lead Pacific Union, who had just seven available players.
The Banana Slugs close the short homestand with a game against Bethesda 1:00pm Saturday at the West Field House.
