Amanda Inserra and
Kaylee Murphy both had double figure scoring, but a cold shooting fourth quarter did in 18th-ranked UC Santa Cruz in a 60-49 loss at No. 16 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
UC Santa Cruz went to 10-3 on the year while UMHB improved to 9-3.
There were four ties and six lead changes in the first half before the Crusaders closed on and 8-4 run for a 34-28 halftime lead. The game stayed close, and
Aubrey Wagner's layup put the Banana Slugs were 1 at 42-41 with under nine minutes left in the game. UC Santa Cruz however missed their next six shots, allowing the hosts to keep the lead and eventually see out the win. UMHB outscored the Banana Slugs 18-10 in the fourth quarter.
Inserra had a team-high 13 points, including three three-pointers. Murphy had 12 points plus 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the year. Wagner added nine points and team-highs of three assists and two steals. The Banana Slugs finish the UMHB Tournament tomorrow when they play another 2022 NCAA Tournament team in East Texas Baptist.
