LA VERNE, CA- Sophomore
Amanda Scott headed home a goal with under two minutes left, and
Alyssa Diaz-Tucker had a last minute save as UC Santa Cruz defeated La Verne 1-0 on a warm Monday in southern California.
The Banana Slugs earned a split on their quick Los Angeles roadtrip and improved to 5-2-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, the second half also had few chances.
Bronwyn Eyre almost got the Banana Slugs on the board in the 81st minute, but her header off a free kick went just wide of the right post. As time was winding down, First Year
Sydney Boyd got free on the right flank and floated a pass to Scott, who got an open header from six yards to put the ball into the net. It was her team-leading fourth goal this year and third game-winner.
The Leopards had one final chance off a throw-in with under 0:40 left, but Diaz Tucker smothered the header attempt.
Each team finished with seven shots, with the Leopards holding a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Diaz Tucker finished with three saves for her second shutout of the season. She also moved into a tie for second all-time at UC Santa Cruz with her 16th career clean sheet.
The Banana Slugs are back in action on Saturday at noon when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Lower East Field.
