Adrian Jacobs had a second half goal, but UC Santa Cruz could not get an equalizer in a 2-1 loss to Whittier College on Saturday.
The Banana Slugs fell to 1-5-3 after their second-straight loss.
Whittier had a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a close-range finish in the 25
th minute. Despite UC Santa Cruz controlling possession, the Poets added another goal on a free-kick with 26:07 left in the contest. UC Santa Cruz then turned up the pressure, and it paid off with 15:33 left when Jacobs was taken down in the box. Jacobs then finished the penalty himself to cut the deficit to 2-1. It was the First Year forward's team-high fourth goal of the season.
Will Barba had UC Santa Cruz's last good chance with 10:53 left off a corner kick, but couldn't direct his shot on frame. The Banana Slugs had consecutive corner kicks with under six minutes remaining but couldn't come up with a shot as the Poets held on.
UC Santa Cruz outshot the Poets 19-7, including 11-3 in the second half.
Tyler Allred had a team-high 7 shots (4 on goal) in his first career start. UC Santa Cruz also had 8 corner kicks to the visitors' 2. The Banana Slugs open a four-game roadtrip next Saturday when they play Division II Holy Names in Hayward.
