THOUSAND OAKS - In the regular season finale for both schools, Cal Lutheran survived a spirited UC Santa Cruz effort as they won 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 24-26) in a match-up of West Coast independents.
UC Santa Cruz (14-16) hit .274 in the match, while Cal Lutheran (17-9) hit .314 and outserved the Banana Slugs 9 aces to 3.
In the close first set, Cal Lutheran scored the last two points to take a 1-0 lead. The second set was similarly close early, but the host Kingsmen finished on a 7-2 run to win and lead the match 2-0.
In the vital third set, there were 15 ties.
Aaron Fox had a kill called on the line to give the Banana Slugs set point at 24-23 and force a CLU timeout. The Kingsmen however rallied to score the next three points to take the set and match.
Fox had a match-high 15 kills to lead the Banana Slugs.
Cinjun Coe added 12.
Colton Jeffrey had 6 kills and a team-high 7 digs.
Tennessee Fulks added 34 assists.
Maxwell Mednick had 4 digs to finish with 277 this season, the most ever by a UC Santa Cruz libero.
