LOS ANGELES - The UC Santa Cruz women's tennis team almost rallied from a dual match deficit, but two wild tie-breaker matches at singles went to hosts Occidental, allowing the Tigers to hold off the Banana Slugs 5-4 on Saturday morning.
Sara Beckman and
Natalie Sprenger won their third doubles match of the weekend 8-4, but the other two went to Occidental, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead early.
In singles,
Julia Chiaradia Azzi and
Sophia Nguyen both won in straight sets to tie the match at 3 wins apiece.
Tanner Rowland won at No. 3 singles with a 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 comeback victory to put UC Santa Cruz up 4-3. However, both the last two singles matches saw the Tigers win in three sets, ending an entertaining day of Division III tennis with the hosts surviving.
UC Santa Cruz (5-5) will close the regular season with three games against higher Division schools, starting Saturday April 9th at Division II Dominican.
