Kaylee Murphy had her ninth double-double of the season and
Tess Oakley-Stilson had a career night enroute to a school record as UC Santa Cruz defeated La Verne 117-72 on Saturday afternoon.
It was the highest-point total in school history, bettering the 116 scored against Simpson in 1991.
The Banana Slugs improved to 12-2 and have won four games in a row, all on the road.
The game was tight early. However with the Banana Slugs leading 10-8, UC Santa Cruz then went on an 18-5 run over the last six minutes to lead 28-13 at the end of the first. They led by as much as 21 at 44-23 and took a 50-33 lead at halftime, the most first half points scored this year.
The Banana Slugs went on another run in the third and led 68-46 with 4:50 remaining after
Ashley Kowack made 4-5 free throws and
Amanda Inserra went 2-2 from the line. Kowack added another layup on a touchdown pass from Oakley-Stilson to make it 70-48. The Banana Slugs ended up scoring 35 points in the third for a 85-63 lead and kept scoring in the fourth to seal the victory.
Oakley-Stilson led UC Santa Cruz with a career-high 33 points. She was 10-12 from the field and a perfect 11-11 from the free-throw line, tying Megan Gaynor's school record set in 2007. The 33 points tied for the fourth-highest individual total in program history.
Murphy had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Kowack had 15 plus five blocks, and
Lindsay Zientek scored a season-high 14. Inserra had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Jazzlyn Johnson led the Leopards (10-10) with 18 points.
Overall, UC Santa Cruz was 47-58 from the line, setting the school record for makes and attempts. The Leopards, who led the nation in rebounding, were outrebounded by the Banana Slugs 64-34.
The Banana Slugs return home to play Lincoln on Sunday afternoon at the West Field House.
