Sohan Kshirsagar hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to help the Banana Slugs finish their comeback and defeat Pacific Union College 74-73 in Angwin.
In the first half, the Pioneers would start the game on a 14-9 spurt and would expand their lead to double digits, at 29-18, on a Trayvon Little three pointer with 10:15 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 13-6 run, capped by a
Treyson Keating layup, to trim the Pioneers' lead to 35-31 with 3:31 left in the half. The Pioneers responded with a 10-2 run, capped by a Corona jumper with twenty seconds left in the half, to gain their largest lead of the ballgame at 45-33 and lead 45-35 at halftime.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs started on a 14-6 run, capped by a pair of
Reece Ivanoff free throws, to trim the Pioneers' lead to 51-49 with 12:51 left. The Banana Slugs would take the lead, at 57-56, on an
Avri Finch layup with 9:57 left. The Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the ballgame at 64-58 after a pair of
Calvin Keyes free throws with 6:00 left. The Pioneers would go on a 13-7 run, capped by a Jordan Lopez layup, to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:15 left. With three seconds left, Chris Jones gave the Pioneers a 73-71 lead. Kshirsagar nailed the gamewinner as the horn sounded after a pass from Finch.
Finch had twenty-three points to lead the Banana Slugs plus eleven rebounds. Keyes and
Ian McCloskey each had nine in the victory. Kshirsagar had six via a pair of three-pointers.
Jones had a game-high twenty-six for the Pioneers.
The Banana Slugs shot 41.7% (30-72) from the field, 13% (3-23) from the three-point line and were 57.9% (11-19) from the free throw line. UC Santa Cruz outscored Pacific Union 48-16 in points in the paint.
The Banana Slugs will wrap up their regular season schedule February 19th against NCCAA member West Coast Baptist College at Kaiser Permanente Arena for Senior Night. Tip off is set for 7 pm.
