The UC Santa Cruz men's tennis team finished a successful home weekend with a pair of dual victories.
The Banana Slugs defeated William Jessup 8-1 on Friday before sweeping rival Cal Lutheran 9-0 Saturday.
UC Santa Cruz made quick work Friday against the four-player Jessup team, including three walkover victories. In the doubles matches,
Jay Pandit and
Aziz Albayouk teamed for a perfect 8-0 win in their Banana Slug debut, while
Sam Hall and
Praneet Varade won 8-6 at No. 1 Doubles. The Banana Slugs then won three of the four singles matches played, with
David Jackson, Pandit and
Rahul Iyer winning in straight sets. It was the first college dual wins for both Pandit and Iyer.
On Saturday, the Banana Slugs won all three doubles against the Kingsmen before winning all six singles in entertaining fashion.
Jackson and
Andrew Tjoa clinched the match with straight-set wins at No. 6 and 5 singles. Â Varade finished the sweep with a comeback 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
"The guys had a great showing today," said head coach
Jimmy Soper. "After winning all three doubles points, the Slugs felt a sense of confidence going into singles.Â
It was great to see all singles positions, except for number 4, conclude with straight forward wins in two sets. Number 4 singles did go into a tough three-set battle which concluded with our freshman, Praneet, pulling off the win.Â
It's motivating to see the guys working so hard and constantly pushing one another."
UC Santa Cruz next have a three-day trip to face more SCIAC opponents, beginning with national top-ten Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday.
