Calvin Keyes pulled a career-high of 21 points, but UC Santa Cruz could not slow down Pomona-Pitzer with their depth and shooting accuracy in a 73-69 loss. Keyes also had a major second half scoring 14 points. The Slugs had gone down to Claremont, CA to face off with the Sagehens in the David Wells Classic.

UC Santa Cruz started the game with
Zino Okah setting the tone with an impressive block as the Slugs' first play. The Sagehens pulled ahead however with an 11-4 lead within the first 5 minutes before a timeout was called and the Slugs contained their run.
Eric DeBrine came off the bench to score 6 points in the first half, breaking up Pomona-Pitzer's hot streak.

Both Keyes and
Avri Finch ended the first half with 7 points and the team not far behind Pomona-Pitzer with only 9 points separating them. The Slugs were 34% from the field and 66% from the free throw line.

The Slugs came close in the second half, were not able to pull ahead of the Sagehens, ending the game with a 69-73 score. Keyes was 6-8 from field goals in the second half, and Finch ended the game with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
Tyler Kessinger followed close behind with 13 points and 4 assists.

Pomona-Pitzer improved to 2-3 overall in their season and the Slugs are 3-3. The UC Santa Cruz men finish the Classic Saturday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and have several games on the road against the SCIAC before returning to Santa Cruz for home games in late December.
