Tyler Allred scored his third goal of the season on a breakaway and UC Santa Cruz's defense held on as the Banana Slugs defeated Division II Dominican University 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
UC Santa Cruz improved to 5-7-3 with their third-straight shutout. The broke a three-game losing streak to the Penguins, who fell to 9-5.
UC Santa Cruz created several chances in the first half. They almost had a dream start less than a minute in but
Caleb Lee had his shot saved for a corner kick. Lee had another shot stopped in the 4th minute and
Tanner Boyea's rebound was also stopped by Dominican's keeper Nylmar Gonzalez De Leon.
Davin Cox had UC Santa Cruz's last chance in the first half but couldn't get his shot in the 43rd minute on frame.
The Penguins had the better of possession early in the second half, and almost got on the board four minutes after the restart but
Arman Salimi had a diving save to push it out for a corner. Allred finally broke the deadlock in the 71st minute as he took a pass from Boyea , muscled past two defenders and sent it into the net from ten yards for the game's only goal.
The game had a testy finish as UC Santa Cruz went down to ten men after a red card in the 89th minute. The free kick however was cleared away without the Penguins getting a shot.
The Banana Slugs finished with an 11-7 shot advantage, with Dominican only having one shot in the second half. Salimi finished with three saves.
UC Santa Cruz next plays on Saturday when they travel to play Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.
