UC Santa Cruz welcomed Division II Stanislaus State to the Lower East Field. The Banana Slugs played exciting soccer in the second half, but two early goals by the visitors was the difference in a 2-0 loss.
UCSC fell to 1-5-2 on the season. Today's match marked the 14th meeting in the series between the two schools and the first time the Warriors had played in Santa Cruz since 2001.
Stanislaus (3-2-1) got on the board on their first shot of the game in the 7th minute. The Warriors doubled their advantage in the 24th minute and kept possession the majority of the half.
Arman Salimi kept UCSC in the game with two point-blank saves of shots by Stanislaus's Julian Madrigal in the 30th minute.
UCSC attacked with gusto in the second half and almost pulled back a goal twice in the first seven minutes. However, both
Kailas Dhond and
Lucas Donoso had their shots saved. Using a three-man frontline with Dhond, Donoso and freshman
Furio Jacomini, UC Santa Cruz kept pressing the whole half looking to get on the scoreboard. The Banana Slugs had their last good chance in the 83rd minute, but Dhond's shot deflected out for a corner kick.
Overall, UC Santa Cruz was outshot 11-8, but had a 5-2 shooting advantage in the second half. There were 36 total fouls called and three yellow cards given out.
The Banana Slugs face another Division II neighbor next when they host Holy Names on Sunday afternoon.
