Rory Monninger scored his first career goal on a putback and the Banana Slug defense did its part as UC Santa Cruz beat old rival Holy Names 1-0 at home on Sunday.
UC Santa Cruz improves to 2-5-2 on the season.
Wolf Schermerhorn had four saves for his second career shutout, including one in the 67th minute to keep the Hawks scoreless. That set-up the eventual game winner as UCSC took possession and passed efficiently down the field.
Ronaldo Nava's shot from the left of the box was saved, but Monninger crashed the right post and reacted first to put the Banana Slugs on the board with 21:05 left.Â
Holy Names (2-3-1) had a 10-9 shot advantage, including 4-3 in shots on goal. The hard-fought game had five yellow cards given out.
