UC Santa Cruz played probably their most spirited game of the season, but a fast break goal in overtime gave William Jessup a 2-1 win in an entertaining game Monday afternoon at the Lower East Field.
UC Santa Cruz (1-5-1)Â outshot the visitors 18-14, including 8-3 in shots on goal.
The Banana Slugs took the lead on their very first shot of the game, as freshman
Payton Cichowski scored in the sixth minute. She took a pass from
Sophia Makarem and blasted a shot that squirted under the Jessup keeper for her second goal of the season.
After some back-and-forth action, the Banana Slugs ended the half in a flurry.
Kayla Alexander had two shots stopped at the post in the final 30 seconds, before
Eleanor Spiller had a last second attempt blocked to keep the 1-0 advantage at the break.
In the Second half, UC Santa Cruz almost doubled their lead. Cichowski had two shots in the 49th minute but was stopped by substitute goalie Rachel Cooper-Huber.
The Warriors equalized in the 87th minute when they connected on a corner. UCSC had the last chance of regulation but
Bronwyn Eyre's shot went wide with under 20 seconds left.
UCSC outshot the visitors 4-1 in overtime, but William Jessup had the last hurrah when they launched a long pass 13 seconds into the second overtime that connected from 20 yards for the golden goal and the win.
The Banana Slugs regroup when they host No. 6 Christopher Newport and rivals Cal Lutheran this weekend.
