UC Santa Cruz held the bulk of possession but couldn't punch in a goal in a 1-0 loss to Christopher Newport.
It was both schools' first conference game ever in the new Coast-To-Coast Conference, formed after the merger of the Capital Athletic Conference and the ACAAÂ last summer. The Captains (6-0) entered the game ranked fourth nationally, but the Banana Slugs played them on even terms the entire game.
With CNU up at halftime, UC Santa Cruz had its best shot to tie it the 72nd minute, but couldn't get on the end of
Julia Hernandez's pinpoint corner before CNU cleared away the goalmouth scramble.
Alyssa Diaz-Tucker had a great diving save in the 76th minute to keep UCÂ Santa Cruz within striking distance. Diaz-Tucker finished with five saves on the day, supported by the backline of
Alexia Santos,
Angela Bradbury,
Emily De Los Santos and co-captains
Fiona Nielsen and
Jessica Goucher.
Rainie Dabbs and
Katie Herm each had a shot on goal for UC Santa Cruz.
Christopher Newport finishes their time in California with a Saturday afternoon neutral-site game against California Lutheran before the Banana Slugs play the Regals on Sunday.
