OCEANSIDE (2-9) - In front of a good crowd of family and friends, San Diegan Ashley Kowack led UC Santa Cruz with 23 points in a 81-57 win against St. Katherine.
The Banana Slugs (12-11) opened with an 11-0 run in the first 4:41 of the game before the Firebirds had their first basket. UCSC then continued with a 11-5 run to push the lead up to 22-7 at the end of the first quarter and never let St. Katherine into single-digits the rest of the game.
Kowack shot 9-22 from the field and had 6 rebounds. She became the 11th person in school history with 800 career points, and the fastest to do so (47 games). Kaylee Murphy added 18 points plus team-highs of 23 rebounds and 6 assists. The 23 rebounds was a career-high for Murphy, who is 12th nationally in rebounds. CJ Catina added 12 points, including 5-5 from the free-throw line. Zeniya Thomas led St. Katherine (5-14) with 14 points.
UC Santa Cruz finished with 66 total rebounds, most in school history. The old record of 64 was set in 2004 against Gallaudet and tied in last year's visit to St. Katherine. The Firebirds in comparison had just 31 rebounds and were 12-24 (50%) from the free-throw line compared to UCSC going 23-35 (65.7%).
The Banana Slugs close the regular season in two weeks on February 21 when they host Westcliff at Kaiser Permanente Arena for Senior Night.
