Box Score Patrick Ramos tied a career-high with 28 points as UC Santa Cruz outlasted Westcliff University 95-93 in double OT at the West Field House Saturday.
The Banana Slugs (6-12) broke a seven-game losing streak.
In a game of runs, UCSC opened strong, running to a 26-16 lead in the first ten minutes, capped by Tyler Kessinger's four-point play and two free-throws by Haakon Ullrich.
Westcliff answered back, tying the game at 28-all five minutes later. UCSC closed the half with a 12-3 run for a 40-31 halftime lead.
Westcliff tried to chip away at UCSC's lead in the second half, but UCSC got contributions from everybody and had a nine-point lead again at 71-62 with under 5:12 to play. Westcliff put together another run, and tied it at 77-all with 1:07 left on consecutive threes from Damas Robbins and Gunnar Mogolis. The Slugs were blocked on the ensuing possession and Westcliff came down looking to take the lead with 0:38 left.
However, Ullrich blocked Westcliff's next possession and the Slugs came down to set up the final play with 0:18 left. However, UCSC missed a pair of threes in the last seconds to send the game to overtime.
The first overtime had Ramos converting an "And-1" with 52.4 seconds left to give the Banana Slugs a 84-83 lead. However, Westcliff took the lead with 0:37 left on a Jacob Knox layup. Ramos drew a foul on the next UCSC possession, but hit 1-of-2 to give Westcliff the last possession. Westcliff got two chances at it, but Knox missed a putback jumper at the horn to send the game to another five minutes.
In the second OT, Treyson Keating gave UCSC an 87-85 lead as he got on the end of an Ullrich pass. The game settled back into its back-and-forth flow as Westcliff tied it with two free throws a minute later. After consecutive Ramos layups gave the Slugs a 94-91 lead with 0:32 left, Westcliff had another chance to end it after a tie-up gave them the ball down one with 11 seconds left. However, Knox missed his jumper and Ramos got the rebound and was fouled with 1.6 left. He went 1-2 again, but Knox's desperation 70-foot heave hit the ceiling allowing UCSC fans to breathe a sigh of relief.
Avri Finch had 21 points and 8 rebounds for the Slugs. Ryan Silva had 19 points. Ullrich had a team-high 9 rebounds along with 7 points and four assists.
Knox led five Westcliff players in double figures with 20 points and 15 rebounds in 46 minutes played.
UCSC closes the homestand with a game against Bethesda 7:00 Sunday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
