SAN FRANCISCO (4-15) – The Banana Slugs played their final regular season match of the 2017 season as they took on ITA/NCAA Division II #11 Academy of Art University in San Francisco. The Urban Knights won 9-0 over the Banana Slugs.
Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs are coming off a 9-0 win over Mills College in Santa Cruz last Saturday while the Urban Knights won 9-0 over Dominican University in San Francisco last Friday.
The Urban Knights won all six singles matches. Three matches – the #3 singles match between Zoë Brook of UC Santa Cruz and Klara Thell-Lenntorp of Academy of Art, the #5 singles match between Danielle Aparicio of the Banana Slugs and Paula Alcantara of the Urban Knights and the #6 singles match between Jessica Kirschmann of UC Santa Cruz and Taisiia Andrieieva of Academy of Art – finished with the Urban Knights' representative winning the match 6-0, 6-0. Two additional matches - the #1 singles match between Vera Smekalina of the Banana Slugs and Monika Stanikova of the Urban Knights and the #2 singles match between Ashley Brudzinski of UC Santa Cruz and Annika Schneider of Academy of Art – each finished with the Urban Knights' player winning 6-1, 6-0. The #1 singles match ended with a 6-8 tiebreaker. The tightest singles match of the day was the #5 singles match between Claire Stoner of UC Santa Cruz and Maria Andrisani of Academy of Art. Andrisani defeated Stoner 6-1, 6-4.
The Urban Knights won all three doubles matches. Two doubles matches – the #1 doubles match between Smekalina and Stoner of the Banana Slugs and ITA/NCAA Division II #11 Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp and the #3 doubles match between Guerrero and Kirschmann of UC Santa Cruz and Alcantara and Stanikova – each had the Urban Knights' duo winning 8-0. The tightest doubles match was the #2 doubles match between Brook and Brudzinski of the Banana Slugs and Andrieieva and Schneider of the Urban Knights. Andrieieva and Schneider defeated Brook and Brudzinski 8-1.
