Banana Slugs Sink Keelhaulers

SANTA CRUZ (11-26) - UC Santa Cruz played their final game of a four-game homestand as they took on NAIA member California Maritime Academy at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs shot better than 45% from three point range and won 64-58 over the Keelhaulers.

Both teams lost their last game. The Banana Slugs lost 52-48, in overtime, to Willamette University at Kaiser Permanente Arena yesterday while the Keelhaulers lost 57-24 to Willamette in Santa Cruz on Friday.

In the first quarter, the two teams would trade baskets for the first five minutes of clock time. The Keelhaulers took the lead, at 12-9, on a Katherine Freitas three pointer with 4:59 left in the quarter. The Keelhaulers would take their largest lead of the game at six, at 15-9, on a Samantha James free throw with 4:12 left. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 6-0 run, capped by a CJ Catina three pointer with 2:09 left in the quarter, to tie the game at 15-15. The Keelhaulers would lead 18-17 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the two teams would go scoreless for the first two minutes and fifteen seconds of clock time. The two teams would trade baskets, and the lead, over the next three minutes of clock time. The Banana Slugs gained the lead for good, at 23-22, on a Jocelin Petatan free throw with 3:49 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at nine, at 31-22, on a Kaitlin Stephenson layup with 1:49 left. The Banana Slugs led 32-24 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would hold the Keelhaulers at arms' length. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the ballgame at twelve, at 38-26, with eight minutes left in the quarter on a Jenna Sparks three-point play. The Keelhaulers would however go on a 13-4 quarter-ending run to come as close as three at 42-39 left on a Samantha James free throw. 

In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs would expand their lead with a 5-0 spurt, capped by a Kim Tom layup, to make the score 47-39 with 8:45 left. The Keelhaulers would come as close as four on two occasions; the second occasion at 62-58 on a Luisa Delos Reyes three pointer with twenty-two seconds left. The win evened the Banana Slugs' record at 2-2

Catina and Katie Young had fourteen points apiece to lead the Banana Slugs while Stephenson had thirteen and Sparks had seven in the win. James had a game-high twenty-three points for the Keelhaulers. Delos Reyes and Alisa Spearman had eight apiece for the Keelhaulers.

The Banana Slugs shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field, 47.4% (9-19) from the three-point line and were 47.8% (11-23) from the free throw line. The Keelhaulers shot 35.5% (22-62) from the field, 30% (6-20) from the three-point line and 66.7% (8-12) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced thirteen Keelhauler turnovers scoring twelve points off the turnovers while the Keelhaulers' defense also forced thirteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twenty points off the turnovers. CSU Maritime outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 41-39 and the Banana Slugs had four more second chance points (16-12) than did the Keelhaulers.

The Banana Slugs will play their first road game of the regular season on Thursday as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks at 6 pm.
