CORINTH, Tx. – UC Santa Cruz's women's golf team placed fourth at the 2016 American Southwest Conference Women's Golf Championship that was held at the par 72, 5,881-yard Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, TX.
The teams concluded their round on Tuesday and the Slugs improved from 345 to 338 in the second round to finish with a 683 team total. UT-Tyler claimed its third straight team title with a 297-306-603 total to beat second-place Mary Hardin-Baylor 306-313-619 by 16 strokes. Hardin-Simmons placed third with a 639 total, LeTourneau was fifth at 697 and Concordia sixth with a 720 total.
For the Slugs, senior Portia Kenney was the top scorer shooting a 76-82-158 total to place T9th. She received Second Team All-ASC honors. Ravipa Losakul had a strong second day posting a 79 to finish in the top 20. Angela McElroy posted a 179 and finished 23rd.
"Leading up to this tournament I had been a little frustrated," said Kenney. "I felt as if my game was in a good place where I could contend. I am more excited about how I played then how I placed in the tournament. To make into the top ten is a wonderful accomplishment but I feel it was merely a consequence of how I played and nothing more. Being top ten and in my last collegiate tournament just made it a little sweeter."
"Portia played a great round, with very few mistakes," said Head Coach Paulette Pera. "She was one under after the first nine, a few putting near misses cost her a few strokes at the end. She was close to the school record."
Pera added, "The team performed to the best of their ability. Ravipa Losakul, team captain, had a great second round finishing her college golf career with a round in the seventies. Tiffany Guzman had the best round of her time here at UC Santa Cruz. Knowing her score was going to have to count on the final day did not cause her to fold under the pressure, she just got stronger."
Morgan Loth of UT-Tyler shot 72-74-146 to claim the individual crown by four strokes over Elizabeth Davis of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
