WHITTIER (3-21) – The Banana Slugs started a three match trip to Southern California as they took on Whittier College in Whittier. The Poets won three singles matches in route to a 5-4 win over the Banana Slugs.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 7-0 to NCAA Division I member Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo on February 20th while the Poets lost 9-0 to St. Lawrence University on Saturday in Whittier.
The Poets won three singles matches, the Banana Slugs won one singles match and two singles matches were defaulted. In the #4 singles match between Amy Leslie of UC Santa Cruz versus Geetha Amarasinghe of Whittier, Amarasinghe defeated Leslie 6-4, 6-0. In the #2 singles match between Zoe Brook of the Banana Slugs and Kindall Yeung of the Poets, Yeung defeated Brook 6-0, 6-0. In the #3 singles match between Ashley Brudzinski of UC Santa Cruz and Jada Henry of Whittier, Henry defeated Brudzinski 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. The tightest singles match of the day was the #1 singles match between Issay Fossett of the Banana Slugs and Gabrielle Etchegaray of the Poets. Etchegaray defeated Fossett 7-6 (11-9), 6-4. The #5 and #6 singles matches were defaulted by Whittier.
The Poets won two doubles matches while one match was defaulted. In the #2 doubles match between Brook and
Callie Matthews of the Banana Slugs and Amarasinghe and Henry of the Poets, Amarasinghe and Henry defeated Brook and Matthews 8-1. The tightest doubles match was the #1 doubles match between
Sylvia Brummitt and Fossett of UC Santa Cruz and Etchegaray and Yeung of Whittier. Etchegaray and Yeung defeated Brummitt and Fossett 8-3. The #3 doubles match was defaulted by Whittier.
