SANTA CRUZ - "Home sweet home" was never more apparent as the UC Santa Cruz cross country team hosted the second annual Banana Slug Invitational.
Paul Colosi won the men's race in 26:07, the course record for a UCSC runner, He was followed by
Half of the field was Division II runners. Irwin Parada of Cal State East Bay was the early pacesetter with Colosi before finishing fifth at 27:29.
"It was a good day. I thought it wouldn't be special because of the poor conditions of the field," Colosi said afterward. "But it was one of those days everything came together.
"I went out at a mellow pace and felt really stong. It bodes well for regionals with a bigger crew at a faster pace.
The women's 6K race was an all-Banana Slug affair. Shannon McClish won the foggy event with a time of 22:11, a course record. "Shannon said she's really happy the way the team ran," said head coach Jamey Harris. "She's feeling great and excited going into regionals."
Raissa Boysen was second in 23:31 and Ashley Anderson was third in 24:34.
The Banana Slugs next compete in the Division III West Regional in two weeks at Salem, Oregon.
